2009 Review: Carlos Silva

AUTHOR: Taylor | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet |

There’s not much to say.  Carlos Silva is a pitch-to-contact pitcher.  The Mariners had the best defense in the majors.  Expectations were low.

And expectations stayed very, very low.

Silva posted a 5.97 FIP in 30.1 innings this year.  His K/9 was 2.97, his tRA was through the roof (6.94), and opposing batters hit line drives over 21% of the time.  Silva rung up a 3.9 swinging strike percentage.  He was bad.  At everything.  Especially at pitching in the major leagues.

It’s hard to say anything positive about Carlos other than that he has lots of room for improvement.  He’ll have a good chance to make the starting rotation next year, but let’s hope he doesn’t.  Hopefully the day will come when Silva discovers how to pitch, and hopefully that day will come soon.

On a strange note, Silva posted a 11.0 swinging strike percentage in his 2003 season for Philadelphia, as well as a 3.53 FIP in 87 innings out of the bullpen.  So, it seems like, if anything, Carlos has gotten much, much worse.
