An Experiment: Challenging Conventional Baseball Wisdom

AUTHOR: Taylor | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: 7 Comments

This summer, Major League Baseball revealed its newest statistical plaything, hit f/x, which records the speed of batted balls. This technological toy may not exactly revolutionize the way the game is played, but it does add a critical variable to a hitter’s value – how hard he can hit. Now teams can determine which batters truly hit the stuffing out of the ball.
Strangely, this hit-tracker data seems to go against conventional baseball wisdom. Hit-tracker results have recently revealed that players with lower batting averages actually hit the ball harder than those with high batting averages. Does that mean that to [...]

Exploring Third Base Options for 2010

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

With Adrian Beltre likely leaving, the Mariners have a gaping hole over at third base for the 2010 season. It’s almost certainly going to end up being a downgrade from what we’ve grown accustomed to, but we do have some options. One option that wouldn’t require any trades or signing, would be to simply put Matt Tuiasosopo there.
We know Tui can hit – that’s never been his problem. He’s a good hitter, but his defense has always been in question. From most accounts, though, he has improved significantly in that respect over the last year or so. He’s been a [...]

The Ocean Breathes Salty

AUTHOR: Harrison Crow | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: 8 Comments

I’ve been thinking about how to make this post for the last week, and while I have my own opinions about how to construct the 2010 Seattle Mariners roster I don’t think I am way off basis here. My ideas at times may have seem strange and I admit some of my posts in the past have been rushed and certain times not thought all the way through. I know people and even Griffin have disagreed with me on certain points here and there, but here it is –I just don’t know if I can buy into the thought of putting someone else in left field other than Michael Saunders next year.
I’m not [...]

2009 Review: Josh Wilson

AUTHOR: Harrison Crow | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

They say there are three sides to every story. Josh Wilson’s story is no different. In 2009 those different stories come from his stats, his streaks and his talent.
Josh Wilson was picked up on waivers from San Diego Padres on June 19th, who also had picked him up from Arizona just 1 month prior.
He tooled around on the team for about a month, where he only had 4 plate appearances prior to being  designated for assignment and then sent  to AAA Tacoma for about month. He was recalled on August 13th to fill an infielder role, when Adrian Beltre went down.
His first stint he was nothing but a [...]

2009 Fall Classic Preview

AUTHOR: Taylor | IN: Breaking News, Previews | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Essentially, this is David vs. Goliath.
The Lovable Losers take on the Perennial Winners.  Good vs. Evil.  Fail against Win. Cheesesteaks vs. Cheesecakes.
Phillies vs. Yankees.
Both teams have stayed put in their respective cities and with their respective names for over 100 years.  Both teams play in high-class cities with music and culture and food and tradition.  Both teams have rabid fans and tiny, homer-friendly ballparks. But the similarities end abruptly there.
The Yanks were 9349-7144 through 2007.  27 World Series Banners hang from their stadium rafters.  They always have money – lots of it – so the best free agents always go [...]

2009 Review: Carlos Silva

AUTHOR: Taylor | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

There’s not much to say.  Carlos Silva is a pitch-to-contact pitcher.  The Mariners had the best defense in the majors.  Expectations were low.
And expectations stayed very, very low.
Silva posted a 5.97 FIP in 30.1 innings this year.  His K/9 was 2.97, his tRA was through the roof (6.94), and opposing batters hit line drives over 21% of the time.  Silva rung up a 3.9 swinging strike percentage.  He was bad.  At everything.  Especially at pitching in the major leagues.
It’s hard to say anything positive about Carlos other than that he has lots of room for improvement.  He’ll have a good [...]
