We know Mike Sweeney is nowhere near the same player he used to be. He isn’t healthy, he’s getting up there in years, and his production this season with the Mariners has been mediocre. Yet, he may still have something to offer to a major league team, at least through 2010. Here’s a trend I’ve noticed:
Mike Sweeney before August 20th (49 G) - .228 BA, .648 OPS, 4 HR, 19:11 K:BB
Since August 20th (15 G) – .418 BA, 1.140 OPS, 3 HR, 8:6 K:BB
Given, the sample size is smaller than I’d like, but he’s proven that he still has some pop and the ability to work pitchers. Now, because of what he obviously brings to the clubhouse, assuming they can’t sign him to a coaching job, it may be worth it to let him stick around in a bench role next year. I don’t know whether he intends on playing another year, or if the team is going to have a spot for him, but if Griffey retires, it could be beneficial to keep Sweeney around in 2010. It probably won’t happen, but if he were able to find a happy medium between that .418 clip and that .228 clip, he could provide some team with half-decent production off the bench.
Just a thought.
