Washburn to Detroit for Two Young Pitchers

by Breaking News

Thank you, Jack Zduriencik! Veteran lefty Jarrod Washburn was traded to the Tigers today for 23 year old pitcher Luke French and 20 year old fire-baller Mauricio Robles.

This is a wonderful day. Luke French is a very similar pitcher to Jarrod Washburn – the main difference is he’s 12 years younger and is under club control for the next six years. He’s basically a control lefty who gets a lot of fly balls. He’s not an ace by any means, but he’s still very young, and already a decent #4 or 5 starter.

Mauricio Robles was the real prize of this deal for the Mariners. Robles is a 20 year old out of Venezuela who is currently pitching in class-A+ Lakeland. He has really great stuff (190 K’s in 182 innings pitched), and plus command. He’s still got a long way to go, and he’s fairly raw, but he’s got a really high upside.

This probably won’t be the only move the Mariners make today, but it was a great start. We got rid of an aging veteran who we no longer had use for, and got two young pitching prospects – one of them, Luke French, is major league ready. Fantastic trade.

Agreed. He has given us absolutely no reason to mistrust him, and he did a great job here.

Good analysis.

I was glad they dealt Washburn, but I didn't know much about the prospects they obtained in the trade. Sounds like a good deal to me after reading your post.

Either way, if you're a Mariners fan and you don't have faith in Zduriencik by now, you've got problems.
