M’s Take 2 of 3 From the Best Team in Baseball

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

A three run, third inning rally turned out to be all the Mariners would need on Sunday, as they beat the LA Dodgers 4-2 and took the best of three series.
This was the first test for the Mariners on this vigorous road trip, and they passed with flying colors. I, along with many other Mariners fans, would probably have been happy with just taking one out of three, but today’s game was icing on the cake and the M’s now sit 39-36, three games over .500.
The Mariners four runs came on a Franklin Gutierrez RBI single, an Adrian Beltre RBI [...]

Andre Ethier and the Dodgers Beat Up on the M’s

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

Tonight’s game certainly wasn’t the ideal start to a tough road trip for the Mariners, but fortunately I don’t think anyone really expected us to win this game. The M’s sent Jason Vargas to the mound to face the young left Clayton Kershaw.
Things were pretty bad from the get go, with Andre Ethier hitting his first HR of the night, a 3 run shot, in the 2nd inning to give LA an early lead. That lead just kept expanding until it eventually ended up at 8-2.
Vargas got whacked around through pretty much all of his 4 2/3 innings of work, [...]

Mariners Clobber Pads; Take the Series

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Mariners finished off their 5-1 homestand tonight by beating up on the lowly San Diego Padres.
The whole game was pretty ugly for the Pads, as it started with an Ichiro HR and ended with a three run ninth. Other highlights included a three run double by Rob Johnson, a mosnter home run off the bat of Wladimir Balentien, and 4 for 5 nights by both Ichiro and Mike Sweeney.
Jarrod Washburn didn’t pitch very well, giving up a lot of line drives and deep fly balls, but he was able to work out of several jams and was good enough [...]

Yuniesky Betancourt Leaves Game With Leg Injury

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Yuniesky Betancourt left tonight’s game against the Padres in the bottom of the 8th inning after suffering an apparent leg injury.  I decided to do my first podcast about what this could mean for the Mariners. Remember it’s my first one, so please bear with me.
Other News:
The Mariners beat the Padres 4-3 tonight. I’m not going to write a recap, but Branyan hit a 3 run homer and Gutierrez hit a go ahead solo shit in the 8th. Aardsma came in for the 9th and recorded a relatively stress-free save.
Ichiro’s hit streak is now at: seven games.
Angels and Rangers both [...]

M’s Make It Interesting, But Come Up Short

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

In a game in which at one point they had been trailing 9-2, the Mariners were able to pull within two runs of the Padres before all was said and done. After a Griffey solo homer, a Branyan two run homer, and a couple of timely hits, the M’s were only down by a score of 9-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Against San Diego closer Heath Bell, Ronny Cedeno led off the inning by drawing a walk, and Ichiro followed with a single. All of a sudden we had Russell Branyan at the plate representing the tying [...]

Can the Mariners Continue to Contend?

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

This is a question that Mariners fans have been asking themselves and eachother all season. So far, there really hasn’t been a clearcut answer, but it’s starting to look more and more like a yes.
As of now, the Seattle Mariners are sitting at 35-34, 2.5 games behind Texas and 2 behind LA. On top of that, this upcoming series with San Diego presents an opportunity to gain even more ground, as our division rivals are facing much more challenging opponents.
Pitching and defense have been the two things that have kept us in this race, something we’ve manged to do with [...]

M’s Complete Sweep of Arizona, On An Error

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

In a game in which King Felix dominated, and the Mariner offense slumbered, it was the opposing first baseman who handed Seattle the win. With two outs and the game tied at two in the bottom of the ninth, Arizona first baseman Tony Clark flat out dropped the throw from third baseman Mark Reynolds on a Franklin Gutierrez groundout.
It wasn’t the ideal way to win a game, but I guess it sorta makes up for the one of the Morrow meltdowns in Texas.
That dropped ball wasn’t the only mistake made by the Dbacks in that ninth inning though, in fact [...]

Mariners Win a Thriller at Home

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

For the first seven innings of tonight’s game, things were looking pretty bleak for the Mariners. Not only were they down 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, but outfielder Endy Chavez had left the game earlier with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, after a collision with Yuniesky Betancourt.
Thing quickly brightened up, though. Russell Branyan led off the bottom of the 8th with a monster home run off of Scott Schoeneweis. After a pitching change, Beltre followed it up with frozen rope single to left-center field. After a Mike Sweeney strikeout  and a Franklin Gutierrez fly [...]

With Branyan and Lopez Gone, Mariners Falter

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: None Yet

With two of their most productive hitters missing today, the M’s were only able to muster up three runs in a 10 inning loss to the San Diego Padres – two of which came on Franklin Gutierrez solo home runs.
Seattle got off to a good start, going up 1-0 in the first on a two-out RBI double off the bat of Ken Griffey Jr – but that one run lead turned into a one run defecit before the first inning was completed. Brandon Morrow gave up runs in the first on a David Eckstein RBI double and an Adrian Gonzalez [...]

Felix Shuts Down Padres

AUTHOR: Griffin Cooper | IN: Mariners General | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Felix Hernandez certainly earned the nickname “King” tonight. He gracefully worked through a two hit shutout tonight as the Mariners cruised to a 5-0 win over the San Diego Padres.  I can’t think of a better way to rebound from a tough sweep like the one the Mariners just suffered in Colorado.
Franklin Gutierrez and Adrian Beltre both went deep for their fourth and fifth home runs, respectively, and Ken Griffey Jr. lined a two run single up the middle to tack on some insurance in the ninth. Our fifth run came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jose [...]
